3 of the Most Common Reasons a Boiler May Stop Working as Well as It Should
There are a number of reasons that boilers are a great, reliable, affordable heating system for a home. With so few mechanical parts, they don’t have nearly as many issues as other similar equipment has, and they generally last longer than comparable heating systems. That said, residential boilers aren’t perfect and they don’t last forever.
If you’ve noticed that you’re not getting as much heat from your boiler as you’d like to – or as you used to – then you may need repairs. No matter how wonderfully you’ve maintained your boiler, there are a few things that may go wrong with it. If that’s the case, then reach out to The Stanley Louis Company at 800-217-6527 and one of our technicians can take a look. In the meantime, you can take a look at three of the reasons it may not be heating as well as you’d like.
- The burner isn’t igniting
- The circulator pump is broken
- Heating elements are failing
This is probably the most common reason that a homeowner calls for boiler service – and it’s no wonder why. If the gas jets located on the burner aren’t igniting, then there’s no heat. If there’s no heat then there’s nothing to warm up the water that’s contained in the tank of the boiler.
The cause of this could be any number of things. In some cases you have an electronic ignitor or pilot light out. In other cases, it may involve issues with your gas line. While some issues can be solved by the homeowner, this issue in particular comes with a risk of carbon monoxide. As a result, we strongly urge you to call a hot water expert to come out and help you. We’ll take care of the problem as quickly and affordably as possible.
It’s true that there aren’t many components in a boiler but there are some. One of them is perhaps more important than the others – we’re talking about the circulator pump. Its job is to take the heated water out of your tank and then send it to the radiators / heaters throughout your home. If the pump breaks then the hot water isn’t going anywhere – no matter how well it’s heating.
If you have a heat pump powered by electricity, then you have two heating elements that are located within your tank. Their jobs are to raise the temperature of that water. If they’re not working, then you’ll need to call in the pros for help. This is generally a fairly easy and inexpensive repair.
