Pool Stains Could Signal a Need for Pool Heater Repair

Copper pool heater fittings could corrode and cause a need for pool cleaning and pool heater repair.

Pool Stains Could Signal a Need for Pool Heater RepairIf your pool has stains, it’s time to call the pool guy. But you might wonder…

Which pool guy? My pool maintenance guy, or my pool heater repair guy?

The answer depends on the kind of staining you see.

Metallic Stains

In the case of stains caused by the interactions of various metals with your pool chemicals, you may need to call both your pool maintenance guy and your pool heater repair guy.

One possible contributor to metallic staining in the pool is corrosion of copper fittings in your pool heater. These stains may appear red, blue, green, or turquoise, and are commonly seen around drains, steps, light fixtures, and return lines. If you see such stains, it will tell you two things:

  1. You need to check your pool chemistry. Copper fittings will always release some amount of copper ions into your pool water. High chlorine levels or low pH levels can accelerate this process and cause corrosion. So if you notice some staining, you should definitely ask your pool maintenance guy to check your water chemistry and make sure it is properly balanced.
  2. You need to check your pool heater. Depending on how long the staining issue has been going on, it’s possible some of your cooper pool heater fittings have become corroded enough to require repair. This is especially likely if the staining is concentrated around your return lines. It is best to be proactive about this situation. Call the experts at The Stanley Louis Company at 800-217-6527. We will send an experienced pool heater repair technician to your property right away to check out the equipment and see if it might need to be repaired or even replaced.

Other Stains

Many types of minerals as well as algae growths can also cause staining in your pool. Some possible stains you might see include:

  • White patches from calcium in the water
  • Rust-colored stains from rebar staining through thin plaster walls
  • Pink or red stains from manganese, commonly found in well water
  • Black, yellow, pink, or green stains from algae or bacteria

If you see any of these types of stains, your pool heater is not to blame. Call your pool maintenance guy for a pool cleaning. In the case of algae stains, you will also need to have your pool chemistry adjusted.
