5 Signs Your Boiler Needs a Repair
There are obvious signs that your boiler needs to be repaired, and then there are signs that you may not know about that you need to keep an eye out for. You can potentially save hundreds on an expensive replacement by getting a repairman in there before it gets too bad. Is your boiler showing any of these symptoms?
Yellow Flame Instead of Blue
A yellow flame rather than blue could indicate carbon monoxide. A silent, colorless, odorless gas, it can be extremely difficult to detect if you don’t know what you’re looking for. The more exposure to carbon monoxide, the more risk you have in having long term breathing difficulties. At low levels, carbon monoxide poisoning can cause dizziness, headaches, and nausea. In serious cases, carbon monoxide can be fatal.
Strange Noises
It won’t take you long to notice your boiler making an unusual noise. While the boiler usually makes some noise consistently throughout the day, that noise fades into your subconscious, just like any other noise you hear constantly eventually does. This just means that any noises out of place will be very easy for your ears to pick out, making this one of the easiest signs that your boiler is in need of some sort of repair.
Heats Up Slow or Slower
If your boiler doesn’t heat up or heat the house up quite like it used to, it may be time for a tune up or a repair. Getting your boiler regularly serviced is always recommended, both to optimize how hot it can get and to reduce the risk of needing a replacement. After all, having routine maintenance performed on your boiler is much more cost-effective in the long run than a large, unexpected boiler replacement bill.
Emitting a Faint Smell
Your boiler not burning properly may be a direct correlation with a carbon monoxide leak. If this happens, your boiler can sometimes emit a faint smell that you’ll immediately know isn’t right. It will smell foul, if only slightly. Pair the smell with any dark spots you see around the casing of your boiler and you’ve almost definitely got a pressing issue that requires a repairman.
Energy Bills Increase
An increase in your energy bill can be the result of a number of things, including your energy supplier simply increasing your energy bill without much or any prior notice. If you’ve got a reliable energy supplier, your fuel bill on the rise could mean your boiler is now costing you money – every single month. Instead of letting your boiler work at only a percentage of what it’s supposed to, an increase in your fuel bill means it’s time to get your old boiler repaired or replaced.
