If you choose an active solar water heater, then it will utilize an electric pump that moves water from your supply line to the collector and then on to the storage tank.
On the other hand, a passive solar water heater uses the fact that hot water rises to move the heated water from your collector into your tank. As a result, the tank must be located above the collector. This one may be a better option for some because it doesn’t use electric power to move the water, but it doesn’t work for every situation – namely a situation where you don’t want the tank to be located above the collector.
