However, if you’d rather take a look yourself first, read on to get some troubleshooting tips for your California pool heater.
Troubleshooting a pool heater that won’t turn on or doesn’t stay on
First of all, clean out the filter and turn the thermostat up. Try the heater again. In some cases, a dirty filter can lead to low pressure, and if that’s the case, then the pressure switch may turn off the heater. Next, check the shut-off valve if your heater is a gas heater. Make sure that the valve is open and that fuel is getting to the heater. If you have an electric unit, make sure that your electric connections are tight and free of corrosion.
If you’re still have trouble, attach one voltmeter lead to a terminal on the transformer. Then touch the other terminal with the remaining lead. If you have a read between 20 and 28 then the transformer is fine. If your reading is lower then you likely have an issue either with the transform or the voltage supply. Leave your lead from the voltmeter on the ground or a common terminal on the transformer, then check out the circuitry that’s connected to your heater. Check the safety fuse, the pressure switch, and the high limit switch. If you see that the meter is showing voltage then you’re fine. If it doesn’t then these need to be replaced.
Troubleshooting low flow or not enough heating
If you find that your pool heater turns off before the water gets warm then you may have either a timer that’s not correctly set or a dirty filter. Clean the filter, set the temperature to ON at a high enough setting for your heater to turn on. Then reset the timer and let the heater run for half an hour. At that point, check the systems valves to make sure that they’re turned to go via the heater. If your problems continue, make sure that your pool heater can handle the size of your pool. If it’s too small then you won’t ever get your pool warm enough. Call The Stanley Louis Company at 800-217-6527 if you find this is the case.
Troubleshooting a pool heater that makes a lot of noise
If you notice that your pool heater is banging, whining, grinding, or otherwise making a noise it didn’t used to then the first thing you’ll want to do is look at the hoses and filters in your system. If there’s debris in there, it could be responsible for the noises. Look first for blockages and then back-flush your filter.
A pool heater may also make unwanted noises if it’s operating after the pump has turned off. This is generally related to a fault within the pressure switch. If you can’t figure out what’s causing the noise, contact a pool heater expert for assistance by calling The Stanley Louis Company at 800-217-6527.
